BNC Terminators
Overview
Terminating unused ports in RF systems is critical to maintain signal integrity and minimize reflection. At Amphenol RF, our BNC terminator family provides engineers and system architects with a reliable bayonet-coupled termination solution that matches the widely used BNC interface. Designed for both 50 Ω and 75 Ω impedance systems, these terminators support quick connect/disconnect via the classic quarter-turn coupling nut and help ensure proper system performance in a variety of applications.
Whether deployed in broadcast video paths, cable modem back-ends, instrumentation systems or general RF platforms, BNC terminators from Amphenol RF allow system designers to confidently end transmission lines, maintain impedance matching and prevent signal degradation. With standardized mechanical and electrical interfaces, selection and integration are streamlined.
Features and Benefits
- Available in both 50 Ω and 75 Ω impedance variants — enabling direct matching to system cable and port impedance.
- Bayonet coupling mechanism allows fast, tool-free termination of BNC ports — reducing downtime and simplifying field operations.
- Designed for miniature quick-connect/disconnect RF applications, using the same BNC interface familiar across broadcast, telecom and instrumentation markets.
- Helps prevent signal reflections, ghosting or stray port interference by providing a defined termination path at the end of a coaxial chain.
- Supports broad availability and standard form-factor — simplifying maintenance, spare management and system upgrades.
Key Technical Details
- Impedance: 50 Ω (standard) with 75 Ω variants for broadcast/video or other impedance-specific applications.
- Frequency Range: While specific terminator part numbers vary, the underlying BNC interface from Amphenol RF supports up to ~4 GHz (and in extended designs up to ~11 GHz) for 50 Ω connectors. Actual termination performance may be cable- and assembly-dependent.
- Mating Cycles: The BNC interface is rated for a minimum of ~500 mating cycles (typical for standard BNC connectors). For terminators, actual use cycles depend on application environment.
- Temperature Range: Standard BNC products from Amphenol RF list an operational range of approximately –65 °C to +165 °C (for the connector family) but terminator part datasheets may list narrower ranges (e.g., –40 °C to +85 °C) depending on power rating and materials.
- Special Features: Bayonet locking, selectable impedance (50/75 Ω), standardized BNC footprint. Note: Standard BNC terminators from Amphenol RF are not hermetically sealed and do not carry an IP67 rating unless specifically noted in the part datasheet.
Applications
- Broadcast and video distribution systems where 75 Ω BNC terminations are required to maintain signal quality in patch panels or cable runs.
- RF instrumentation, test & measurement platforms where unused BNC ports must be terminated to preserve calibration and reduce noise.
- Telecommunications and cable-modem system ports, where spare BNC connectors require termination to avoid reflections or signal leakage.
- General RF network or coaxial cable assemblies in commercial, industrial or lab environments where reliable, standard BNC terminations reduce spare-part variety.
- Rapid field deployment or maintenance environments where bayonet-style coupling offers quick installation without tools.
